Why did the characters in the matrix movies travel in ships?

Milton Why would they need to travel? I mean, everything's destroyed, and they risk getting killed by the machines if they leave zion, so why travel? Hurtsboro I'd really never thought of it before. But they have to go to where the bodies are stored to release people like Neo. They physically pluck him out and put him on the ship. If they didn't do this, there would be no Zion. There may be other reasons, but I think one should suffice. Siloam Springs Because they have to get closer to the surface to reach "broadcast level". They can't stay in the city forever, how would they know what the enemy is up to? They are a rebel force, it's what they do. Villa Rica Would you stick to a large cave underground if you could avoid it? Curiosity. Find weaknesses in the machines, save and release those trapped in the battery pods - lots of reasons! Why do people drive cars?
