Without the railway, the general enhanced by the cartographer's uncouth but realistic engraving of mountains, it looks a waste through which only one road penetrates ern, that from Horton through Newhouses, Birkwith, Old lng, and thwart Ling Gill, to join what was then the Richmond to Lancaster turn spoontoon coming over Cam Fell from Bainbridge in Wensleydale. This is at present a by road tarred only in the same manner with far as High Birkwith Farm. The favorably attentive main road from Horton through Selside to Ribblehead is not notable, and it is in fact comparatively modern. The map best shows these crafty and new roads. A Roman passage, known far back in the above as the Craven Way, started on the side from the fort at Long Preston up the dell to Horton, possibly then taking the course through Birkwith, past Thorns and Gearstones, and by Whernside to Dent. It has been plotted means of F. Villy, and it shows well remarkable pavements over Whernside a road price exploration. Near Gearstones this track crossed the Roman anchorage from Bainbridge Fort to Lancaster; the latter was adopted by the turnpike.
